Kiki de Montparnasse is a thoroughly modern bohemian. I went to the Man Ray exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery last week. It was packed and I nearly fainted from the heat but hey, everyone likes Man Ray and
I was there to see Kiki!
Formerly “Alice Prin”, she is known best for being Man Ray’s lover. Born to poverty an illegitimate child, she came to Paris to earn her keep in the bakehouses of Paris. She soon turned to posing for artists and infiltrated the bohemian scene. She was a painter in her own right, memoirist, night club singer and all round socialite.
When I’m in a bit of a jam, I think “what would Kiki do?” and instantly everything becomes much better!
