An Encyclopedia of Russian Criminal Tattoos

ImageI’ve always had a thing about codes and secret messages. From Charles Babbage to Bletchley Park, maybe it’s a slight spy fantasy. When I was looking at pre-raphaelite painters, I overlooked the actual painting quality in favour of the strange symbols that they hid within their paintings.

My flat mate showed me this Encyclopedia of Russian Criminal Tattoos and it’s got me really excited. There is so much you can read from a convicts “ink”, an entire life story all disguised in code. The best things about it is that they aren’t always as obvious as you might think. For instance a celtic cross can look like a cross hair and therefore is a sign that someone had a previous profession as a hitman. It’s so interesting. I thoroughly recommend all of volumes 1,2 and 3!!!
